Reflecting

Ideas and Content
I really showed good ideas and content with my powerful quotes. I carefully chose them so they clearly represent the ideas I am presenting in essay. I also explain the contents of the quote and how it is significant. (eg.) “It must be by his death; and for my part, I know no personal cause to spurn at him, but for the general good.” Brutus is showing his honor to his country, because even though, he has no personal charges against Ceasar, he is willing to kill his friend for the good and freedom of his people. This caused mixed feelings between the people. In this example I really explain all the significance and content of the quote, but I could also improve my writing by putting more specific details, such as really taking apart the quotes.

Organization
My writing demonstrates appropriate organization because I always have the topic sentences and concluding sentences. I also organized my ideas in an appropriate order and have quotes in the appropriate places followed by an explanation which shows my understanding of what I am saying. I could still improve on making my transitions between ideas smoother.

Personal Growth
I note that my organization has improved. I have my ideas lay out in order and have appropriate topic and concluding sentences. I also improved in my punctuation. I have many less marks pointing out punctuation errors than in my alchemist essay. Another thing I improved on was spelling. In my alchemist essays I tended to have many silly spelling mistakes, where i left out letters in a word.

SLR Reflection
Reasoning critically
I used reasoning critically in my essay because it required to really look at the whole play and pick out the parts which are most significant. I also had to really think what sides of Brutus I was going to show. Then I had to explain why I chose specific quotes by explaining their significance and contents.

Brutus's Honor and Devotion Towards Rome

“Believe me for mine honour, and have respect to mine honour, that you may believe.” (pg128) In the play the Julius Ceasar, all Brutus can do is hope his country sees how honorable and devoted he is and hope they accept his reasons for killing Ceasar. Brutus is lets the people decide for themselves if his act is honorable or not. This also shows his devotion to the people in letting them think of him what they please without being forced. Brutus’ honor and devotion drove him to kill Ceasar for the good of Rome.

Brutus believes that to be a true Roman one must be honorable and contribute to the society. He is always and honorable to his country, doing only what he truly believes is for Rome’s good. Because Ceasar was becoming ambitious Brutus killed him, as this was the only solution to free Rome of becoming a monarchy again. “It must be by his death; and for my part, I know no personal cause to spurn at him, but for the general good.” Brutus is showing his honor to his country, because even though, he has no personal charges against Ceasar, he is willing to kill his friend for the good and freedom of his people. This caused mixed feelings between the people. Some may have found Brutus’ act dishonorable. But even Antony, Ceasar’s good friend, secretly found Brutus honorable. “All the conspirators save only he did that they did in envy of great Ceasar; He only, in a general honest thought and common good to all…” Even though Antony was angry and upset that Brutus killed Ceasar he truly believed that Brutus was the one conspirator that had done this out of the goodness of his heart. This shows how Brutus’ honor might have been absent to his people, but it was there to those who looked more carefully.

Brutus was the most devoted man to his country and people. He killed his own friend for them and even offered his own chest for them to stab. Brutus would go to any heights to please not only the people around him, but his entire country. After killing Ceasar, Brutus allowed the people to make their own decisions on weather they think him honorable or not. “ …to him I say that Brutus’ love to Ceasar was no less than his… Not that I loved Ceasar less, but that I loved Rome more.” Ceasar was becoming ambitious and Brutus feared he might do wrong so he slew him and left it to Rome to decide his fate. Brutus devotion is shown in how, even though he believes his act was honorable, he is leaving it to the people to decide. Rome is so important to Brutus he is even willing to give his own chest to stab with the same dagger Ceasar was killed. “With this I depart, as I slew my best lover for the good of Rome, I have the same dagger for myself, when it shall please my country to need my death” Brutus later gets one of his soldiers to kill him once they lose the battle against Antony and Octavius’ army. He does this only for his people and his devotion is truly evident throughout the play.

When Brutus killed Ceasar, Some people found this a dishonorable act and set out to get revenge over his assassination. Even though the people could not see it, honor and devotion were the motivators behind this act. Even though these motivators caused Brutus to kill his friend, which resulted in a war, some, such as Antony were able to see through the anger and betrayal. But even though Antony saw this he kept fighting for revenge and this was not was Ceasar wanted. In the end Brutus achieved his goal to free Rome of Ceasar, but it took much bloodshed, including his own, and violence to get Antony to finally confess. Brutus might not have achieved his goal peacefully and democratically the way he had planned but he finally set Rome free. This goal was definitely noble and worth, because Brutus was only doing it, for what he believed was the good of Rome.

Lost Boys of Sudan Collage Reflection

Think Creatively:
My collage demonstrates thinking creatively in how I organized it and the items I thought of putting on there. I organized my pictures to make it look confusing and messy because that is exactly how the lives of the refugees were. I think it is quite creative how I took a piece of cloth and made it look bloody to cover the images of death caused by the war. I also thought creatively in the way I showed their journey with the maps in order and the string showing their journey.

Reason Critically:
My images really showed the devastations they went through but then it also show that they used to be happy and really wish to go back to how it used to be. My text shows the same concept, but it also shows how they question why they had to survive while everyone died. Some of my pictures are also more symbolic and they are not pictures of actually Sudan but symbols that represent their issues.

Communicate Effectively:
My collage really shows everything the ‘boys’ had to deal with. I shows much of the devastation, which really shows people the truth of their story and makes them want to do something to help.

Live Ethically:
The pictures in my collage might evoke empathy in whoever is looking at it, because they can really see what is going on and it can make them want to take action to help the people that had to go through this. I might also make people very sad that people would so vigorously destroy so many lives.

ISKL Mission Statement for band

Part 1
The International School of Kuala Lumpur provides an exceptional education that challenges each student to (silence) develop the attitudes, skills, knowledge and understanding to become a highly successful, spirited, socially responsible global citizen.

I think putting the VOID in this place causes the most tension because because it leaves the listener to wander what it challenges each student to do. When the listener is able to wander for a few seconds they can make maybe think of what they would put as their mission. At the same time it gives the listener time to take in what was just said, and interpret it. If the listener was someone who has never read or heard the mission statement before, they would probably be anxious to hear what comes next.

Part 2
A composer can create tension in music by taking away elements of the music, such as, rhythm or melody. This causes the listener to wander what happened to the music or if the song will regain its wholeness. The more elements taken away, the more tension is created. It also usually causes a more unpleasant sound. The composer then releases the tension by putting each missing element back, bringing the song back to it's original form.

Lost Boys of Sudan

1. Discuss the difficulties “Lost Boy,” Peter/Santino experienced while assimilating into the American culture?

Peter faced many difficulties settling into the American culture, as it was very different from their own Sudanese culture. In Sudan Peter did not have to work hard or worry about money, while in the U.S. everything is about money. But Peter is not as interested in money as he is in education. The reason the “Lost Boys” were sent to the U.S. was to go to school so they could help the people back home. Peter has a hard time getting education and a sufficient paying job in Houston, so he moves to Kansas so he can have a better life. He finds that many times people can be racist against their culture or ethnicity. At one point even a teacher judges Peter by his first appearance, but Peter quickly proves himself a much brighter person. Peter mixes with some different cultures, but he finds it hard to adjust to their ways. He doesn’t know how to act so that he can fit in with his group of friends. To prove himself bright and capable of being educated and at the same level as anyone else Peter finds that he has to strive further than the average.

Band

1. I would call this story Lottery because the whole story is just about a lottery.

2. I was not sure what was going to happen but I knew it was something bad. What led me to think this was the tension and nervousness within the whole crowd and the way Tessie kept saying it was so unfair. Throughout the story, the crowd's mood sways. one moment they are all laughing and having fun, the next they are serious and nervous. This warned me that something bad was going to happen.

3. I felt very frustrated and anxious but I calmed down after a while.

4. I felt anxious but nervous to know what was in the folded paper. I was nervous because I had a black dot on my paper. I thought the end of the story would be in it but I also thought there would be something else that we would not like. I did follow the instructions because once I found out what the black dot was, I got a lot calmer and wasn’t as anxious to know what other ‘punishments’ were inside.

5. I felt curious at first, but then as the story went on and I began to figure some more things out, I started to feel a little afraid for the people.

6. I felt angry that they would just do that to someone because of a lottery and I felt sad for Tessie because she hadn’t done anything to deserve that.

7. Most of my predictions were correct but I didn’t think the punishment was going to be that bad.

8. If the author had given some more away in the beginning then it would have been easy, but it wouldn’t have created as great a void.

9. To make the reader want to read on and find out what would happen.

10. a) You really had no clue what the story would be about.

b) It made you frustrated and curious to know what will happen.

c) It draws you to think and ponder on what will happen.

d) It makes you even more curious to find out what would happen and also frustrated that I couldn’t find out.

e) It makes you frustrated because you want to know what will happen in the story.

f) The fact that I had a black dot on my paper.
